The Third Space

Set within the remote wilderness of northern Mongolia, this intervention marks the entrance to an environmentally conscious retreat.

Crafted on site by locals, we developed the concept and spatial vision for a wooden screen that defines the threshold between the vast steppe and the retreat’s main building — a space that filters light, wind, and views while guiding visitors inward.

Drawing from the cultural context of Mongolian life — where a clear divide traditionally exists between the enclosed darkness of the ger and the openness of the landscape — we explored the idea of a third space: a subtle, sensory transition between outside and in. Crafted entirely in wood, the screen offers both shelter and exposure, inviting daylight while creating a moment of pause.
